Neurofibrillary degeneration (NFD) corresponds to the intraneuronal accumulation of pathological tau proteins into abnormal filaments.
NFD was first demonstrated by Alois Alzheimer. He stained brain tissue sections with silver stainings to demonstrate the presence of the lesions that characterize what will be called (later) Alzheimer's disease. He demonstrated the presence of neurofibrillary tangles, dystrophic neurites and senile plaques, the basic lesions of AD.
